Weekly Review: Slow and Steady
I really liked the reading this week, mostly because we got to read Virginia Woolf, who I am a big fan of. I feel really sympathetic towards her struggles with her role as a woman in a sexist society, her struggles with mental illness, her desire for independence, and so much more. It's hard to think about these things because it's so depressing, to think that people were once okay treating their fellow human beings as second class citizens because of their gender. It's even worse when you realize there are still people out there like that today. Still, it's important to read and learn about, because knowing the truth is important even when it hurts.
I've found that a good strategy in improving my writing is to focus on the work piece by piece, tackling only what is immediately in front of me and not thinking about the rest. If I think about the whole work, I end up feeling overwhelmed and unsure of myself. When I take it piece by piece I end up thinking "Oh, I can tweak this, delete that, change this." and by the time I get to the end I realize just how much these little changes improve my work. I will continue to break up my work and take it one step at a time. I need to unlearn my obsession with making big leaps in progress, and understand that I can't just do it all at once.
I am really happy with my work in my other classes right now, even though I'm a bit worried about a few bigger assignments coming up soon. One of the assignments gets really personal, and I tend to have difficulty writing honestly when it comes to personal essays. I'm used to keeping my thoughts and feelings to myself, so having to express them is uncomfortable. However, I understand that it's important to leave your comfort zones to grow as a person.
Hi Veronica, I can definitely relate to having to work on things one at a time rather than focusing on everything I have to do. Especially in this class, there are a lot of tasks to do and it can be overwhelming to look at them all at once. I try to make checklists because then when you are done with something you get the satisfaction of checking it off which helps me feel like I'm slowly but surely chipping away at the work. Good luck with the end of the semester!
