Week 14 Project Action Plan

I have decided to answer the prompt: "You’ve been appointed the student member of a college committee to revise the core curriculum. The committee has decided to require that all students enrolled at LMC must take this course, and you have been asked to nominate 4 to 5 fiction selections (from the selections we have read this semester) that will be required reading for the course. You are, in other words, creating the anthology." The question is asking me to choose 4 or 5 of the stories we've read to create an anthology, and describe in detail why I've selected those stories. For my project, I will seek to use stories from a diverse range of authors. I will ensure there will be a variety of cultures, genders, and orientations from across a broad span of time. I will also ensure that the stories themselves have a wide assortment of themes and writing styles, not just the authors. Since there are three volumes, I can choose at least one story from each, while doubling up on two. I plan to use two stories from volume D, one from E, and two from F. I feel that this will make the anthology and my essay feel more sequential and show the difference between where we began and where we ended more clearly. I'm not completely set on the works I'm using, but so far these are my ideas and why I think they'd make a good fit for the anthology.

1. Tartuffe: Discusses themes of hypocrisy, corruption, religion, which were very controversial at the time. Lets us discuss the context of the piece and compare its relevancy then to its relevancy now.

2. Du Tenth Sinks the Jewel Box in Anger: Shows Chinese writing and allows us to compare cultures as it is from a similar time as Tartuffe. How different are the values and writing style across cultures?

3. Notes from the Underground: Allows us to discuss Realism and the context it came about in.

4. A Room of One's Own: Gives us reason to discuss Modernism and what spurred the movement. Also gives us reason to discuss gender inequality as experienced from the perspective of a woman

5. Poetry of Leopold Sedar Senghor: For this one, I'm not sure if we're allowed to choose all the poetry that we read for class or if we must pick one. Either way, this selection allows us to cover poetry, adding diversity to the different forms of writing students read. Also, the themes of his poetry are heavily tied to the context of the time period, his culture, and racism.

  1. Hello Veronica,
After reading through your action plan, I'm really excited to see what you come up with. I believe this is both one of the easiest but also one of the most challenging topic prompts to do. The hard part is choosing which stories you would include because there is an incredible amount of literature out the to choose from. The good news, it looks like you already have them picked out. The next part is just going through a really elaborating as to why these should be included in an anthology. For the last selection, Poetry of Leopold Sedar Senghor, I think that you could say all of the poems, or even just mention a few. Poetry is definitely a good choice. I also think that Notes from the Underground is a great choice. I'd be curious to see how you tie them together, or it not, why they would be included in your version of the anthology. I look forward to reading your project!

  2. Hey Veronica, I liked that you've picked this prompt because it's not used regularly throughout this course. For me the toughest part was what literature i would use if i were to choose this topic. It's good that you've already planned out what literature texts you want to use for it. I think theses texts are good ones for your main idea which is on choosing 4-5 texts for anthology. I want to see how they would be related to anthology because i haven't taken anthology yet so I am curious to know. I wish you the best of luck for your final project !

  3. Hi Veronica,
I loved your action plan, especially how you endured your readers that there will be “a variety of cultures, genders, and orientations from across a broad span of time,” even though the prompt you chose may seem direct and more structured. You also supported that by choosing stories from all three volumes to give us that variety. I like how you took the time to briefly describe what you will be pulling from all five of the stories. I know you that you stated the stories you chose are not concrete, but so far, it’s a great start. My only suggestion is to maybe state how all these five fictions are beneficial to the new or revised curriculum- what they can expect to gain from all the readings you’ve chosen. For example: “Towards the end of the semester the student will be able to recognize the role in which the voice of literature played during the era’s covered in all three volumes.”

  4. Hello Veronica, I think you have a good project action plan set out. The topic you have chosen will be interesting to read because I have only read one other classmates project who has done the same topic. The works you have chosen to possibly use all seem like they will be conncected well with your topic. The first two forsure will go well with what you want to right about and I'm sure that the other three will too , I don't remeber exactly what the other three stories were about for I read them a while ago, but I'm sure they will work just fine. With Tartuffe you can describe how the father was manipulated to let Tartuffe into his home and let him walk all over him. The second story will work really well to compare and contrast to the first story because there are a good amount of similarities but a lot of differences too between their cultures. Overall, I think your project is going to turn out well.

  5. Hi Veronica,
I like how you pretty much laid out the main point that you were going to talk about in each of the paragraphs you are going to write about . I think you had a great contextual evidence and you did a great job incorporating the literature and quotes from it into your project that made it flow very well together. I also like how you are thinking of formatting your project it looks like it will be easy to read and follow. Your project also answers your main question pretty good I think if you had a specific thing you were going to talk about and show. I like the question you choose because there is a lot of ways you can go on writing your essay. To me the only problem would be to me is all of the sources you are using can make your essay difficult. overall i am looking forward to what you are going to write in your essay and what the final outcome will be.
